Join us on January 24 for the University of Washington Urban Design and Planning’s Future of the City: Using Planning to Create A New Vision for Seattle. Our Director Rico Quirindongo is this event’s special guest lecturer.
WHEN: Wednesday, January 24, 2024, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
WHERE: Architecture Hall 147 on the UW campus
Rico Quirindongo, AIA, has been working for 30 years to revitalize and reimagine Seattle historic landmarks and neighborhoods. He is the Director of the City of Seattle’s Office of Planning and Community Development. Rico believes that through vision, authentic community engagement, and multi-agency cross collaboration, opportunities for social change can be realized through community-invested civic projects.
Rico will be discussing the City of Seattle’s role within the larger framework of growth of the region, and will outline how the City plans to implement the Comprehensive Plan and the State’s ‘middle housing’ bill HB 1110. He will talk about how the City is hoping to address displacement, advocating for social equity and social justice in our planning efforts, and how the removal of single-family zoning provides for an opportunity for more equitable neighborhoods. He will explore how planning professions need to change and the role of community engagement in the planning process. He will also consider how we evaluate the city’s success based on how we plan.
